Dennis Elon Nielson

Dennis Elon Nielson, 89 years of age, died Monday February 10th at 4:55 p.m. at Apple Village Assisted Living Center, Layton, Utah.  He was born January 25th 1925 Goshen, Bingham, Idaho of Oliver Herman Nielson and Astrid Carolina Johannson.  Death was of natural cause’s incident to old age.

Dennis was married to Marie Brough Nielson December 1st 1948 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

Dennis grew up on his father’s farm growing potatoes, grain, sugar beets and livestock.  He claimed to be the fastest beet topper in the valley, next to his brother Carlos Nielson.  He served a mission to the Hawaiian Islands.  His companion LeGrand Brough’s sister eventually became his wife after returning home from his mission.  Dennis worked in California as a traffic manager in the shipping and receiving departments of various companies like Caterpillar, Lane and Boler and Deseret Pharmaceutical in Utah.  Later starting his own manufacturing company as a co-owner in the production of composite products.

Dennis had a passion for baseball, music, dance and gardening.  Playing baseball whenever the family got together or with other families and friends.  He loved to play catch with his sons and the old game of burn out.  Music was a part of his life from childhood to adulthood, playing in his father’s band on the drums.  Dennis and his wife loved to dance and participated in many dances around the valley.  Having a family garden was a joy for him to work in and produce the richness of fresh vegetables and fruits.

He loved to spend time making wood working projects for the family.  Camping and the great outdoors where a large part of his life on vacations and various outings.

Dennis served in many Church callings in the various wards he lived in.  Bishoprics, Young men programs and the Sunday school organization.

He was a friend to many people and was always willing to help and assist a neighbor or friend in need.  He knew the meaning of hard work and exemplified it in his life by passing these characteristics on to his sons and daughters.

Dennis is survived by his brothers Carlos Nielson, Marvin Nielson, Naomi Larson, Nancy Nielson.  His children Theresa Childs, Joyce Graham (preceded in death), Richard Nielson, Mark Nielson, Merrill Nielson, Judy Simmons, Margaret Broadhead, Jeanene Thain, Reed Nielson and Lynn Nielson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Clearfield 11th Ward, 1125 E. 1225 So., Clearfield.  Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Interment, Syracuse City Cemetery.
