FRUIT HEIGHTS - Derral Mark Child, 91, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2016, in Ogden, Utah. Derral was born on the 4th of July, 1925, in Clinton, Utah, to Chancy and Loretta Rice Child. Derral was raised in Clinton and graduated from Davis High School, class of 1943. During World War II he joined the Army Air Corps, earned his commission, and became a pilot. He married his high school sweetheart, Romania Grant, on August 10, 1945, in the Salt Lake Temple.

Derral was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many church positions throughout his life. After the war ended and after their first daughter Ellen was born he was called to the South Pacific Mission where he taught the gospel to the Japanese people living in Hawaii.

Derral earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and worked for many years in the aerospace and petroleum industries. Derral loved to fly and flew in the Air Force Reserves for thirty years retiring with the rank of Major. Derral also loved to sing and had a booming baritone voice that he freely shared whenever asked.

Derral is preceded in death by his first wife Romania. He is survived by his wife, Emma Lou; his children, Ellen Fassett (Dan) of Catacachi, Ecuador; Mark Child (Debra) of Provo, Utah; Kathleen Smith (Keith) of Hilliard, Ohio; Evelyn Walknhorst (Dan) of Napa, California; and Miriam McKay (Don) of Soldotna, Alaska; three step-children Dana (Doug), Jeff and Noel and their children. Derral has 21 grandchildren, and many great and great-great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held Friday, October 7, 2016, from 6 pm to 8 pm, at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, UT. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 8, 2016, at 2 pm at the Fruit Heights 2nd Ward, 77 South Orchard Dr., Fruit Heights, UT. A viewing will also be held just prior to the funeral service, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm.

Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd.
