Elmer “DeVon” Moses

6/1/31-12/30/20

A true love story. Only separated for 2 weeks

Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather Elmer “DeVon” Moses passed away peacefully at his home in Bountiful on December 30, 2020.  Preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Sharon, exactly 2 weeks and 36 minutes apart.  He kept his promise to Mom that he would stay long enough to take care of her, and that’s exactly what he did.  What a true love story!

He was born June 1, 1931 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Elmer Woodruff Moses and Alice Maude Petty.  Dad spent his early childhood on farms in Wapello, Idaho and then in Riverside, Utah.  He said he had a near perfect childhood.  The farms are where he began his enduring love of horses.  The family moved back to Salt Lake City, and Dad graduated from East High School and then enlisted in the Navy.  He served proudly during the Korean War from 1951-1954.  He was stationed on Ford Island in Hawaii as an Air Traffic Controller.

He married the love of his life, Sharon Pearl Horton on July 16, 1954 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  They were later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple.  They were blessed with 6 children.  Twins- Michael DeVon and Melvin Leon who passed away shortly after birth.  Daughters Melony Hansen (David), Karen Harrison, Wendy Neary (Michael) and favorite son Wesley DeVon Moses.

Dad worked for ZCMI, The Les Olson Company and then Sperry-Rand and Univac which later became Unisys.  He was lucky enough to get to travel while working on missel systems all over the world.  He visited at least 10 different countries and 22 states.  After he retired, he then worked for an auto auction transferring cars back and forth to keep himself busy.

Dad was a member of the Bountiful Jeep Posse for 65 years, and served on hundreds of search and rescues.  He treasured his association with the Jeep Posse, making many lifelong friendships there.

Dad always had a list of things to accomplish every day.  He also had an immaculate garage full of tools.  He was always building or working on something.  Many friends and family members were blessed with one of his handmade wooden crafts.  Dad loved working in his yard.  He was probably the only person that loved watching the deer eat everything in his backyard.

Dad had many horses over the years, making him the favorite Grandpa and uncle to so many.  He was a true cowboy, never seen without his hat and boots!  He loved his trips into the Uintah’s on horseback with his friends and family.  Talking about his horses always brought a smile to his face.

Dad was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  He served faithfully in many capacities.  Dad was always willing to help anyone with anything that they needed done.

Also preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Maude; as well as all of his 6 brothers and sisters- Eugenia Hart, Gordon Moses, Darrell Moses, Sherrill Moses, LaNez Cropper, Waneen Nield, twin sons Michael & Melvin and of course, his sweet wife, Sharon.

Survived by daughters, Melony Hansen (David), Karen Harrison, Wendy Neary (Michael) and son Wes.  9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by one brother-in-law, Darrell Nield and one sister-in-law, Cathy Moses. Lots of nieces and nephews that adored him.

There will be a private family viewing and graveside service.  The family of DeVon wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sam Wilson and Hospice nurse, Angie that so sweetly cared for our parents in the last few weeks of their lives. A special thank you to Mom and Dad's niece Dawni that did so much for them.
