After having too many birthdays, Don Maurice Johnston, 89, passed away at Davis Hospital and Medical Center on April 23, 2019 after a short illness.
Don was born prematurely October 2, 1929 on the kitchen table in West Point, Utah to Maurice and Verda Montgomery Johnston.
He grew up in West Point and had a great time delivering papers, playing baseball and working on the family farm with his brothers.
He married Sherma Arave and they had four children together, Shanna, Michele, Gina, and Darrin. They were later divorced.
Later on he met his loving wife of 51 years, Linda Hunsaker Hammond and her young son Brian and made a family of all the children together.
He worked at HAFB from age 17 and retired at 55. He received many awards for his outstanding work.
His loves were always dogs, family, cars, motorcycles, camping, and being out in nature but not necessarily in that order. His love for dogs was stronger than for most people. His two treasured companions were two very special mini schnauzers, the last one who was able to visit him in the hospital just hours before his passing.
Don’s life was filled with fun adventures with his family and close friends which included his brothers Alan, Noal, and their families. There were too many adventures to mention. Around the campfire is where you could solve the world’s problems and where all the good stories were born, truth or fictional. These were the best times of his life.
He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
His passing has left a huge hole in our hearts.
Don is survived by his loving wife Linda, children, Shanna (Fred) Masters, Michele (Jeff) Johnson, Gina (Ken) Hamilton, Darrin (Sue) Johnston, Brian (Angela) Hammond, 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, brothers, Alan (Carol) Johnston, Noal (Joan) Johnston, many nieces and nephews he loved and one special dog that misses him terribly.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Todd S Masters, and son-in-law, Kerry Clegg.
