Don Woodfield McEntire

Don Woodfield McEntire, 88, of West Point, Utah passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 18, 2018 of pancreatic cancer.

Don was born November 15, 1929, in the Dee Hospital in Ogden to William Rawson McEntire Sr. and Rosene Maria Woodfield. He was the youngest of six children and grew up in Huntsville, where he spent many happy hours fishing and hunting in the rivers and mountains near his home with his dog, Fritz, who was his constant companion. He was also on the ski patrol at Snow Basin. He graduated from Weber High School and served an LDS mission in the Netherlands.

Don was sealed to LaRae Porter on November 26, 1952, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple by President David O. McKay, who was a family friend.

He served his country in Germany during the Korean conflict where he and LaRae lived for 18 months. He and his family also lived in Ogden, Roy, Clearfield and West Point.

Don worked at H.A.F.B and retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1992 after having worked at the Ogden and Layton Post Office as a postal clerk. He always had a part-time job having worked several years for Lindquist Mortuaries. He worked hard but made a special effort to take his family on a yearly vacation.

He and his beloved companion served two fulltime missions to the Netherlands from 1993-1994 and from 2000-2001. He has served in many capacities in the LDS Church including: Stake High Councilor, Bishop’s Councilor, Gospel Doctrine teacher for several years and as Scoutmaster. He was an ordinance worker in the Ogden LDS Temple for over 14 years. Don was a gifted teacher and many loved to listen to his lessons because he incorporated stories. He had a gift for storytelling.

He always kept a beautiful, bountiful garden and he shared his produce with neighbors and friends. Watching sports on T.V. was a treasured pastime, but his favorite program was Jeopardy and he could answer almost every question. He loved nature and could recognize any bird by its song, name all trees and flowers and could spot a pheasant in a field from a mile away. He spent many hours baking breads and pies and sharing them with his family and neighbors.

Oh, and by the way, he got his tomatoes planted.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, LaRae; children: James Guy, Roy; Gwen Fellows (Ray), Clinton; Dodie Webb (Blake), Murray; Kellie Cooke (Kerry), Hooper; Patti Rae Stanger, Syracuse; 21 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren with two on the way. Don was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings: Virginia (Judy) Stallings, Ross, Laura Hawkes, Helen Slater, and Jay.

The McEntire family would like to give a special thanks to Nurse Stephanie and to Community Nursing Services. We would also like to extend a loving thank you to Sara Arrington, APRN, and her staff at Heart and Soul Family Medicine for their love and care for Don through this time.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 25, 2018 at the West Point 13th Ward Chapel, 3290 W. 800 N. West Point. Friends may visit with family on Sunday, June 24, 2018 from 6-8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 W. 5600 S., Roy, and Monday at the church from 9:30-10:30.

Interment will be in the Huntsville Cemetery where military honors will be accorded.
