Donald Stephens Child, 88, passed away Friday, May 13, 2011 at George Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home.
He was born October 27, 1922 in Ogden, Utah to Jesse Edward and Lucy Pearl Stephens Child. He graduated from Weber High School. He lived in Riverdale for 72 years and Roy for 16 years.
Don honorably served as a Corporal in the 1905 Engineer Battalion of the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was assigned to be a sign painter for the Burma Road and was requested to play the trumpet to entertain the troops.
He married Donna Taylor on May 20, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She preceded him in death on June 24, 1993. On February 6, 1998, Don married Margaret Bond Stimpson.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served as Bishop, Scoutmaster, Ward and Stake Missionary and Temple worker.
Don worked at Hill Air Force Base as an illustrator for 30 years, owned Child''s Signs and also owned, with his brother, Riverdale Services.
He was a member of the Good Sam''s Club "Over the Hill Gang", where he enjoyed many friendships.
Don enjoyed woodworking, photography, computers, camping, traveling, drawing and Big Band music.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; a son Lee T. (Lorna) Child, Roy; two daughters, Connie C. (Kenneth) Felt, Salt Lake City; Ranae (Douglas) Porter, Billings, MT; five step-children, Gary (Susan) Stimpson, Jean (Robert) Smith, Don (Joan) Stimpson, Margie (Jim) Sparrow, Shelley (Lindy) Cascadden; 35 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and step-greatgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Stephen D. Child, a sister Reah Scott, two brothers, Roscoe and Oscoe, and two grandchildren, Valorie and Andrew Felt.
The family expresses sincere appreciation to the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home for their kindness and compassion, especially, Cosandra, Amber, Andy, Adriane and Carl.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 18th at 11 a.m. at the Roy 3rd Ward Chapel, 5930 South 2200 West.
The family will meet with friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South and Wednesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the Roy 3rd Ward Chapel.
Interment with Military Honors at Roy City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests donations to the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home, 1102 North 1200 West, Ogden, Utah 84404.
