DONALD CLARENCE COY
1933 – 2016
Donald Clarence Coy, beloved husband, father, grandparent and great-grandparent, brother, and friend passed away August 26, 2016.
Don Coy was born to Ellen Thelma Hawkes and Clarence Alford Coy on November 10, 1933 on a cold night on his parent’s farm in Plain City, Utah; it was so cold outside that they put him in the oven of the coal stove to keep him warm. He had an older sister, Jerene, and three younger brothers: Dean, Morris and Marvin.
Don married Verna Lenore Johnson on November 7, 1953. They met roller skating and after a brief courtship, they were married; 5 ½ years later they started their family. They are the proud parents of Lynnette (Robert), Debbie (Richard), Kelly (Nadine), Steve (Lisa); 15 grandchildren, 20 ½ great-grandchildren. On July 26, 1963, Don and Verna were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple and have remained faithful in the church ever since.
After service in the army in Korea, he returned home and learned the upholstery trade. He was a very hard worker and rarely sat still, his hands were constantly moving. He and Verna opened Bountiful Upholstery in 1959 (later Don Coy Upholstery); and through the years they employed many young men and women, as well as their children and some grandchildren.
At a young age Don showed artistic ability and developed this talent throughout his life. He painted and gave away many lovely paintings before he discovered the art of western bronze sculptures that are on display at home and in galleries. He spent countless hours deciding what to sculpt, studying the anatomy, building the armatures, molding the clay over and over again, making the molds, having them bronzed, and then perfecting them.
Don and Verna loved to travel; they saw more of the world than a farm boy from Plain City would have ever dreamed. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time in the mountains; he especially loved to whitewater raft.
Don was active in the LDS Church and diligently served in many callings. He served as a Stake Seventy and spent many years as a Cub Scout leader. He always fulfilled his callings to the best of his ability. He was a compassionate, caring man who helped others in any way he possibly could.
Don was a very fun dad and grandpa; he loved to wrestle and throw children over his shoulder claiming he had a sack of potatoes. He was generally fun to be around.
Thanks for being such a great husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and friend.
