Donald Ray Gerhardt
“Don is out flying his pigeons”
December 24, 1932 ~ June 14, 2014
How appropriate it is that our patriotic father would pass away on Flag Day.
Don was born to Albert G. Gerhardt, Sr. and Frieda A. Gerling on December 24, 1932 in Evansville, Indiana.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Don graduated from Benjamin Bosse High School and Mechanic Arts in Evansville, Indiana.
He had an Honorable discharge from the US Air Force, serving in the Korean War.
He worked 31 years with the Federal Postal Service.
Don loved hunting, fishing, target shooting, camping, Nascar, and talking about guns and cars.
He loved entertaining people with his stories and jokes, but his biggest passion was his Birmingham Roller Pigeons, especially flying them for Goldie. He could tell you when and where about any historical event. His positive attitude and outlook on life was an inspiration to all those who knew him. He never complained. He would make everyone smile.
He married our mother, Goldie Cheney in 1974. Don would say, “We spent 33 great years together.” He was an amazing step –father to Goldie’s seven children. Jackie (Merwin) Holgate of South Ogden; Robert (Shari) Cheney of Layton; Kathryn Cheney of West Jordan; Bruce (Ann) Cheney of Rock Springs, WY; Glen (Janet) Cheney of Beaver Dam, AZ; Sherri (Barry) DeHaan of Clinton; and Jolene (Neil) Palmer of Ogden.
Our Father has been reunited with his wife, parents, brother, sister, and three grandchildren. What a happy reunion that will be.
Don is survived by his seven step-children, 30 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and one on the way. He is also survived by four nephews and two nieces.
We want to thank our extended family at Peachtree Place for their tender loving care the last ten years. We would also like to thank Hospice for Utah for their compassionate service. We are forever grateful.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 18 th at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. The family will meet with friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.
