Donald Robinson Smith

April 20, 1932 ~ October 23, 2014

Donald Robinson Smith 82, returned home to Heavenly Father and his sweetheart LaVell 23 October 2014.

He was born 20 April 1932 in South Weber, Utah to Charles Herbert Smith and Eliza Handy Harding, the third of six boys. Don attended Ogden City Schools, graduating from Ogden High School.

He married his high school sweetheart, Carol LaVell Barker, on 14 March 1951 in the Logan LDS Temple. They shared 60 wonderful years together here in mortality, before LaVell was called home on 4 May 2011. They now have an eternity together beyond this life.

Don enjoyed spending time with family, and loved to be in the great outdoors with them, camping, tubing and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. Square Dancing occupied many years of Don and LaVell’s lives. Don was a square dance caller for several dance clubs in the Ogden Area. He was the founder of the Ace of Clubs. They made countless friendships and shared many laughs and good times together with their square dancing friends.

Don was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served faithfully in many positions and was a great influence for good in many lives. He and his wife, LaVell served for many years in the St. George Temple as missionaries and ordinance workers and they served several other church service missions together. After LaVell’s death, Don continued his work in the baptistry at the St. George Temple. He loved serving others and found great joy in giving to those in need.

For 17 years he was able to work with his wife, LaVell, in managing Tana Acres Apartments in Kaysville and Harrison Regent Retirement Center in Ogden. He loved working with his wife and best friend and together they were able to travel to Hawaii, Venezuela, England and the Caribbean, to name a few. Prior to working with LaVell, Don spent most of his professional career as a salesman and manager in the retail environment working for Wangsgard’s and Smith’s Food and Drug. He was a hard working provider for his family, sometimes working three jobs to provide for their needs.

Don enjoyed tinkering in the wood shop and ceramic shop making creations that he would share with family and friends. His greatest treasures are his family, his temple covenants and his testimony of the Lord, Jesus Christ. These core values directed him in every action and were the source of strength through all of life’s challenges and opportunities.

Don is survived by his children, Gary (Pam) Smith Washington Terrace, UT; Scott (Valerie) Smith St. George, UT; Jody Lynn (Dale) Wilkerson, Washington, UT; Kelly (Dixie) Smith Logandale, NV; Kirk (Annalisa) Smith Roy, UT; 35 grandchildren, 90 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Harold, his twin, Ronald, Arnold and Gerald. He is preceded in death by his wife; daughter, Janice; grandson, McKay; his parents; and one brother, Fred.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South, Roy, Utah with Bishop Jimmie Clatterbuck presiding. A viewing will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm at the mortuary and Thursday 9:45 am to 10:30 am prior to the services.
