After retiring from teaching, Don and his wife traveled to mainland China where they taught English for a year.
An active member of the LDS church, Don served in bishoprics, various quorums, and auxiliary programs. He was blessed to spend two years serving full-time with his wife in the Family and Church History Mission in Salt Lake City. He was released in June 2007.
