Donna Lou Beckstead Winger

June 2, 1925 ~ February 5, 2015

“Together Again”

Donna Winger passed away on February 5, 2015 in her home at Mtn. Ridge Assisted Living just 4 months before her 90 th birthday.  She was born in Preston, Idaho on June 2, 1925, where she was raised by her loving parents, Leo N. Beckstead and Helen Merrill, with her sister, Connie and brother, Quinn.  She graduated from Preston High School just before moving to Ogden to work at HAFB and later IRS.  Donna married her sweetheart, Alton Winger on May 21, 1945 just after WWII.  They were later sealed in the Logan LDS Temple with their only child, Irene, at their side.  Later years found them cruising and traveling in their trailer.  It was exciting to celebrate their 60 th Wedding Anniversary before Alton passed away in June of 2005.

Donna was a stalwart member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints and a knowledgeable student of the scriptures. Her life was filled with faith and hope as she served in many callings including teacher, secretary, and President of the Relief Society.  Her love of family history was evident through her membership in the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, where she spent many years as secretary and president of her chapter.  Music filled her life with joy as she played the Harmonica and her special organ that was like an orchestra.  Her home was always filled with music. Her love of the arts was also evident in her hobbies of ceramics and stitching.  She was seen with a needle constantly in her hands that were never idle, as she did needlepoint, made quilts, ornaments, and pictures as her husband watched every sport on TV.  Donna loved books, was always reading and in her later years was never without a book to read.  Above all, she loved her family and was so proud of them and their accomplishments. Donna was a wonderfully organized homemaker and loved and served her family well. She was loved and appreciated for being a quiet, gentle, grateful, and gracious lady, with a gift for listening to others and instilling confidence and showing appreciation to them.

Donna is survived by her daughter, Irene W. (Bob) Thurston; grandchildren, Melissa Atkinson, Adam (Jeneen) Murdock, Matthew (Marci) Murdock; seven great-grandchildren, and her sister, Connie.

Special thanks go to all her wonderful friends (residents and staff) at Mtn. Ridge Assisted Living who brought joy to the sunset of her life, the Skyline Branch, Andrea Nelson, Carolyn Russell, Dr. Gary Holland, Health Watch, and Hospice for Utah.
