Doris T. Elmer
SOUTH OGDEN – Doris Terry Elmer, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away Sunday, September 6, 2009 at the age of 84 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born December 22, 1924 in Antelope, Idaho to John Harold and Lizzy Viola West Terry.
She married Gael W. Elmer on June 19, 1945 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Milford, Utah; Springville, Utah; and Greeley, Colorado before moving to Washington Terrace, Utah in 1965 and South Ogden in 1998.
Doris was employed as a bookkeeper/accountant in Idaho Falls, Idaho and worked for many years for the IRS in Ogden.
Her interests were music, genealogy, oil painting, and traveling. Doris was valedictorian of her graduating class and had a passion for learning that continued throughout her life. She began playing the piano for chorus classes when she was in Jr. High School and enjoyed accompanying her husband, Gael when he sang vocal solos. They enjoyed traveling to Europe, visiting cities that Gael had passed through while a P.O.W. in World War II.
She served in many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Doris enjoyed serving for many years as a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She also served as ward organist and choir director.
Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are her sister, Jean (Jack) Barnes, Rexburg, ID; six children: Larry (Linda) Elmer, Layton; Scott (Anita) Elmer, Ogden; Susan (Gary) Guernsey, St. George; Christine (Dennis) Pearson, Foothill Ranch, CA; Melanie (Roger) Butler, South Weber; and Lisa (Jon) Schneiter, West Point. Doris and Gael had 20 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers, John, Wim, and Cecil, and sisters, Beth Fisher and Ruth Olsen.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for all the loving care given to Doris at the Meadows Unit at Mountain Ridge Assisted Living, Gentle Home Care, Hospice for Utah, Dr. Gary Holland and Dallen Larsen, P.A.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 12 at 11 a.m. at the Washington Terrace 9th Ward Chapel, 125 East 5350 South.
Friends and family may call at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Friday, September 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday at the Ward Chapel, 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
