She was born November 13, 1927 in Garland, Utah, the first born child of James Lawrence and Lavona Garn Cater. She was reared on the historical family farm and attended Garland Elementary school. In 1946, she graduated from Bear River High School.
Doris met and fell in love with LaVern Robert Maisak. The couple was married at the Carter family home on September 27, 1947.
She worked for Dr. Mohr in Tremonton, Utah at the Bear River Valley Clinic. Vern and Doris lived in Garland until moving to South Ogden in 1957.
In 1959, Doris graduated from the Weber State College Nursing Program as a registered nurse. She worked at the old Thomas Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah. Later, she became the head nurse for the Intensive Care Unit at the Thomas Dee Hospital and then at the McKay-Dee Hospital. She continued her education at the University of Utah, completing her bachelor’s degree in 1972.
After her retirement, she worked in Saudi Arabia, spending two years at the King Fahd Hospital as a nurse. While there she traveled extensively throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. After two years, she returned home and cared for her husband until his death on May 2, 1987.
In later years, she volunteered as a nurse for the Red Cross and the Ogden Rescue Mission, receiving many awards for her service. Continuing her love for travelling, she toured different parts of the world with friends and family for many years. She enjoyed golfing and especially loved playing bridge, a skill her mother taught her as a young woman.
Doris is survived by two children, Diane and Robert. Also surviving are a former daughter-in-law Rita Maisak and three grandchildren: Stephanie Fife, Jamie (Charlie) Plavchak and Mark (Aarika) Maisak.
