Doris Summers
Doris Elizabeth Cowlishaw Summers died on December 5, 2011 from natural causes. She was born on December 24, 1920 in Frontier, Wyoming to Benjamin and Pearl Cowlishaw. She was raised at the Lincoln Star Mine, Wyoming that was owned and operated by her father. She graduated from Kemmerer High School and the University of Utah, receiving a degree in education. She taught second and third grade at Emery, Utah, and worked as a nurse''s aide in Salt Lake City; later she was a substitute teacher in Aurora, Colorado for seven years.
On July 1, 1942, Doris married James Summers. Jim taught her to fly airplanes. She was his caregiver for six years prior to his death in 1997. They had four sons: Keith (Kathy) Summers, M.D., Paul (Tan) Summers, M.D., David Summers, M.D. and Dale Summers, a computer expert. Doris has numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Enthusiasm and zest for life characterized Doris. She rode bicycles down Pike''s Peak, took grandkids on trips to see Star Mine, and was always taking pictures. Her stories about her family and childhood are a much-loved part of the lives of her extended family, who are now telling them to their own children.
Throughout her life, Doris actively served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as Primary President, genealogist, and many other positions. She wrote a book on Cowlishaw/Quinlan family history and was a world traveler, getting together with family members and collecting family history.
Doris is survived by her four sons and two sisters, Carma Bassham (Marshall, deceased) and Benita Illions (Seymour, deceased). She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two infant brothers, brothers Eugene Cowlishaw and Howard Cowlishaw, and sister Virginia Ikola.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit family on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
