Dorothy Carlsen

– Dorothy Carlsen “Granny”, passed away Friday, September 19, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 18, 1922 in Bismarck, North Dakota to Jesse and Josephine Howard. She was one of six children. Dorothy grew up on a farm in Dunn Center, North Dakota. She decided to become a nurse and did her training at Bismarck Hospital. She proudly served her country with the Army Nurse Medical Corp during World War II. She was a Second Lieutenant, stationed at Bushnell General Hospital in Brigham City, Utah. Dorothy married the love of her life, Alexander “Swede” Carlsen, Jr. on April 17, 1946 and their vows were solemnized April 17, 1963 in the Logan LDS Temple. Dorothy and Swede had three children, Marianne, Bruce (deceased) and Robert. Dorothy and Swede moved their family to Palmer, Alaska in 1950 where they lived for seven years. They moved back to Riverdale in 1957, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Dorothy was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Riverdale 1st Ward. She especially loved Relief Society and was a very out-going member. Dorothy’s nursing career spanned over 42 years. She worked for over 20 years at the Ogden Clinic, first in pediatrics and then she moved to obstetrics. She loved both jobs. She called the pregnant ladies “my girls” and she truly loved them. Dorothy loved to garden throughout the years. Her yard was always one of the most beautiful yards with many colorful flowers, and a great vegetable garden. She baked thousands of cookies throughout the years and there is not a person she knew that did not get a plate of fresh cookies at one time or another. When her grandchildren came along they started calling them “Grandma Cookies”. They could cure anything and of course made each person feel loved and special. Dorothy was a sweet and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was most known for her positive attitude, sweet smile, and was great example to everyone she met. She was always kind and compassionate and willing to help others. She will be greatly missed by all. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Marianne (Merrill) Ford, West Valley; her son, Robert (Stephanie) Carlsen, Washington Terrace; five grandchildren, Andrew (Candis) Ford, Steven Ford, Samantha, Christopher and Kevin Carlsen, four great-grandchildren, Dimitry Ford, Ivy Price, Destiny and Dustin Forbes. Also surviving is her brother-in-law, Stan (Donna) Carlsen, sister-in-law, Kay Carlsen and Florence Howard, as well as many nieces, nephews and soon-to-be family members. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 23rd at 1:00 p.m. at the Riverdale 1st Ward Chapel, 1056 West 4400 South. Friends and family may call Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and at the church on Tuesday form 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. Send condolences to the family at: www.lindquistmortuary.com /stop
