Dorothy Lucretia Chapman, 93, passed away on September 22, 2011 at Legacy House Assisted Living.

She was born November 22, 1917 in Portland, Oregon to James LeRoy and Sarah Williamson Smith.

Dorothy completed high school in Portland and moved to Los Angeles to train as a dressmaker. After training, she worked in millinery and dress shops. She returned to Portland, where she worked until she married Guy E. Chapman on June 22, 1941 in Vancouver, Washington. They were married for 63 years. He passed away on September 9, 2004. His career with Boeing Aircraft Co. led them to many locations a€" Seattle, Ogden, Missouri, South Dakota, North Dakota and Whidbey Island, Washington. In 1991, they relocated to the Ogden area.

Service to her church and community has been her focus during her life. She sewed for the Red Cross during World War II. A leader in Cub Scouts and Camp Fire Girls, she was also a youth leader in the church. She taught Sunday and Bible School, and was a district officer of United Methodist Women, president of the Church Women United and volunteer with Head Start. She was an active member of Community Methodist Church, she enjoys a Bible study group and other activities.

Dorothy is survived by her son James (Deann) Chapman, South Ogden, Utah; and daughters, Janice Wilson, Warren, Michigan; and Charlene (Ned) McCracken, South Weber, Utah; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, September 26, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Community Methodist Church, 163 West 4800 South, with Reverend Diane Bell officiating.

The family would like to express appreciation to the staff of Legacy House and Alpine Hospice for their dedicated care and assistance.

Those who wish may make donations in Dorothy''s memory to either the Community United Methodist Church Building Fund or to the local chapter of Habitat For Humanity.

Cremation under the direction of Lindquist''s Crematory.
