Dorothy Poll Markham

“Together Again”

Dorothy Poll Markham, 89, our loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, with her family by her side.

Dorothy was born on January 13, 1928 to Royden Vine Poll and Chloe May Jaques in Strawberry, Morgan County, Utah. She grew up in South Weber surrounded by her large extended family. Her sisters and many cousins remained her closest friends throughout her life.

She married Cleary Hence Markham, Jr. on June 27, 1947 in South Weber. They were sealed for time and eternity in the Ogden LDS Temple on November 28, 1989. They enjoyed many happy years together and when Markham’s health declined, Dorothy lovingly cared for him until his death in 1993.

Hard work was a theme throughout Dorothy’s life. She worked at the Ben Lomond Hotel coffee shop for thirty years where she enjoyed serving many of the Ogden Dodgers baseball players. She was an amazing cook and worked for Davis School District Nutrition Services for nineteen years. She was manager at Clearfield High School where she perfected her famous rolls. One of her greatest joys was preparing delicious meals for her family to enjoy.

Dorothy loved fishing and camping with her family, gardening and taking care of her beautiful yard, and in her younger years going dancing with her sweetheart. She loved sports and enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren’s games where she was their biggest fan. She was an avid Utah Jazz fan and rarely missed watching or listening to their games. Her dogs, Mitsi, Spanky, Bubba, and Bandit, kept her company and brought her much joy over the years.

Dorothy had a testimony of the Savior and was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served as a visiting teacher. Most of her days were spent in selfless service to her family.

Dorothy is survived by her four children and their spouses; Kathleen and David Johnson, Dennis and Diana Markham, Paulene and Howard Gibbons, and Troy and Kathy Markham, eighteen grandchildren, and thirty-three great grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings and their spouses; Joyce and Danny Weaver, Joann and Don Stone, and Max and Betty Poll.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her infant son, Bobby, her parents, three brothers, Delbert, Vine, and Edward Poll and one sister, Rhea Westbroek.

The family is extremely grateful for the dear family, friends, neighbors, and ward members who watched over Dorothy throughout the years, especially Randy and Nancy Hilton and Darla Lucas. Our sincere thanks to IHC Hospice and Comfort Keepers for the tender care they gave our mother in her final days.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road, Layton, Utah. The family will meet with friends on Friday from 6 to 8 pm and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the mortuary.
