Dorothy Lucus Paine
October 13, 1935 ~ December 10, 2015
2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Dorothy Lucus Paine was born to Orville Lucus and Ada Allred Lucus on October 13, 1935 in Superior, Arizona. Our Mother passed peacefully away to gain her much deserved final reward on December 10, 2015. As the last of 5 children, she was doted upon by her parents and older siblings. Her father was a Master Carpenter and often took work wherever needed.
When Mom was young, her Dad moved the family out of the desert to Flagstaff, Arizona because of Mom’s allergies. They then moved to Pacific Grove, California where Mom spent her teenage years, loving Big Sur, the ocean and artichokes! She spent time with a good friend who lived above a gas station, hanging out the window and admiring all the young GIs from Fort Ord who would come in to fill up. Here is where she caught the eye of a young soldier by the name of Albert William Paine, Jr. (deceased). Mom and Dad were married on April 14, 1952 and for the next 20 years she followed Dad round the world to various military installations before settling in Layton Utah.
She became extremely adept at being able to run a household full of children on a limited budget and support Dad and us while he was away during numerous military forays and never complained. She forged many long lasting friendships during Dad’s military career. Many non-military friends would often ask her how she could stand to constantly be leaving her homes, and her reply to them (and us!) was always “When your pictures and paintings are hung, you ARE home!” She loved fudge, canasta, cooking, traveling, reading and country western music. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren gave her much joy and bragging rights!
Mom spent many years as a member of the Davis County Republican Party, the American Cancer Society and as a Mentor/Advisor for the Breast Cancer Society helping those who were undergoing mastectomies and chemotherapy. Mom was a firm believer in the saving grace and mercy of God as a member of the Episcopalian Church and part of the congregations of St. Peters and The Good Shepherd.
Mom is survived by her eight children, Joy (Dominick) Lombardi, Karen (Gary) Kerper, and Jeremy Preston, Susan (Greg) Brown, William (Iva) Paine, Michael Paine, Melissa Gillette and Mark Schaefer, Stephen (Kasandria deceased) Paine, and Benjamin Paine. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at 1 p.m. at Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
