Dorothy Stirling
1921-2008
Dorothy Joanna Stirling, 87, passed away Sunday, September 14, 2008, at her son’s home in Sandy, Utah.
She was born March 20, 1921, in Nutley, New Jersey, the daughter of Dominick and Margaret Serritello Bonanno. Married Clyde B. Stirling September 1, 1945 in San Diego, California. He passed away September 5, 1990.
Dorothy was raised in Nutley and moved to Washington D.C. during WW II to work for the Department of Defense. She later served in the US Marine Corps Women’s Reserve during World War II and was stationed in San Diego. There she met Clyde, who was also in the Marine Corps. In 1945 they moved to Pocatello and raised their family. She lived in Bountiful for the next 45 years and then moved to Sandy in 2000.
She worked as a volunteer at Lakeview and Alta View Hospitals for many years. She was a talented artist who painted with both water colors and oils; she especially enjoyed painting butterflies. Raised as a Catholic, she attended several Protestant churches as an adult. Dorothy was kind and thoughtful toward everyone and particularly caring and generous to all of her family.
She is survived by her sons J. Andrew Stirling (Kathy) and C B Stirling (Nancy); seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren; brother Carmen Bonanno; sisters Mary Melillo and Joan Young. Preceded in death by her parents, and a brother Joseph.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, September 19, 2008 at the Bountiful City Cemetery, 2224 S. 200 W. under the directions of Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary. Dorothy requested that donations be sent the Humane Society of Utah in lieu of flowers.
