Douglas Watson Laws

Douglas Watson Laws of Layton, age 95, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2013 of causes incident to age. He was born July 12, 1917, in Thatcher, Utah, the oldest of eight children born to Joseph and Effie May Call Laws. His parents and siblings Fay, Joe, John, Tom, Ruby and Marjorie preceded him in death. His youngest brother, Irvin, is still living.

He was raised on a farm in Malad, Idaho where he learned to work at a young age. Horses were used to plow, run the derrick, and pull a variety of other equipment. He was fond of horses his entire life and often recalled memories of his youth including the sleigh rides where he drove the horses. He graduated from Malad High School.

A pretty, delightful gal in northern Utah caught his eye, they became sweethearts and he married Verna Harris in Portage on February 22, 1938. They were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple August 16, 1940. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary last month.

After leaving Malad, Doug and Verna lived briefly in Rexburg and Pocatello, Idaho, eventually settling in Tremonton for nine years where he worked for Fronk''s Chevrolet. The family moved to Layton in 1957, he worked for Marquardt Corp. for 14 years followed by 19 years as a building official for Layton, City. He retired at age 70. He and Verna spent 20 winters in St. George. Dancing was a favorite activity there and they shared many good times with new and old friends. Doug was devoted to Verna and his family. Long remembered will be the good times shared at home, especially the traditional Christmas parties and back-yard summer BBQ''s. Doug and Verna enjoyed traveling together to visit friends and family. They traveled extensively visiting other states, many countries in Europe, and the Caribbean Islands. He found great pleasure in growing beautiful flowers in his yards and supporting Verna as she painted beautiful flowers in oils.

A life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many ward callings and with Verna as an Ogden LDS Temple ordinance worker for four years. He was an active member of his ward in Layton and so appreciated his membership in the church.

Doug is survived by his wife, Verna, Layton; son, Doug Jr. (Lois) Laws of Perry; daughter, Diane (Phil) Bangerter of Bountiful; daughter-in-law Bonnie Laws of Ogden; 15 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son, Denton Laws; daughter and spouse, Gloria and Robert Kay.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Malad City, Idaho Cemetery at 2 p.m.

The family wishes to thank the CNAs and staff at Apple Village in Layton for their loving care of Doug and Verna over the past two and a half years and Curo Home Health Care and Hospice for meeting dad''s needs in his final days.
