Douglas Lay

July 1, 1949 — April 17, 2019

Our beloved Douglas Pardue Lay passed away on Wednesday, April 17th, 2019, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 69.

He was born in Gastonia, North Carolina on July 1, 1949 to Robert E. and Mary Frances Lay.

Doug joined the U. S. Air Force in 1969 as a still photographer. In 1971, he became an Aerial Motion Picture Cameraman, flying film missions during Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. After retiring from active service in 1995, Doug continued serving as a civilian for a combined total of 42 years. A mentor and father figure at heart, Doug mentored countless Airmen throughout his career.

An avid outdoorsman, Doug loved to fly fish, hunt and golf. He was an accomplished carpenter, painter, and craftsman who loved to work around his home doing various projects.

After Doug retired, he and his wife of 42 years, Luanne, traveled their country in their land yacht; seeing the sights and visiting with family and the many close friends they had made throughout their years of service.

Doug is survived by his wife Luanne, son Philip (Riki), daughter Elisabeth, grandchildren Mark, Trevor (Toni), Matthew, and Taylor, and great-grandchildren Brynlee, Kason, Sydalee, Tinslie, and Teigan. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Frances, and his sister Bettye.
