LAYTON- Dr. Richard B. Winward passed away peacefully, in his home, surrounded by many loved ones on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at the age of 72 due to health complications from a recent heart attack.

Dick was born on August 7, 1937, in Salt Lake City, Utah to parents John Dalley Winward and Martha Emily Holloway. He graduated from East High School and served as an LDS missionary in the New Zealand mission. While he was serving, the missionaries had the opportunity to help with the completion and dedication of the New Zealand Temple. During his mission, Dick gained a great love for the Maori people. That love continued throughout his life as he served as President of the New Zealand Missionary Society. His missionary work continued as he served his country for two years in Fort Bliss, Texas, in the United States Army. Missionary work was always an important part of Dick''s life. Dick graduated with a Bachelor''s Degree from Utah State in June of 1964. While attending, he met his sweetheart Pauline Kirkbride. They were married on June 12, 1964 in the Logan LDS Temple. Following their marriage, they moved to Colorado where Dick graduated from Colorado State receiving high honors with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine.

They moved back to Utah where he worked at the Layton Veterinary Hospital until starting his own practice, A Animal Hospital, in Clearfield, Utah. He received many awards and recognitions throughout his life for his work in veterinary medicine, the community, and scouting.

He was a faithful member of the LDS church. He served in many positions including as bishop, high counselor, scoutmaster, and was a devoted home teacher.

He enjoyed working hard, fishing, hunting, and traveling. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, friend, and will be greatly missed.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife Pauline Kirkbride Winward and daughters Debbie (Kenneth) Sherman, Jan (Kyle) Israelsen, Luana (Ridge) Hartley, Cindy (Kevin) Hugie, Crystal (R.J.) Perry, and his 15.5 grandchildren. Also survived by his siblings Lueve (Boyd) Whitby, Jack (Ruth) Winward, and Terry (Della) Winward.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 26, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Layton North Stake Chapel, 1954 E. Antelope Drive. Friends and family may call Sunday from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd. and Monday from 11:45-12:45 prior to services at the church.

Interment, Lindquist''s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 N. Fairfield Road.
