Dr. Almon Junior Bate
November 25, 1930 ~ July 3, 2014
Almon Junior “AJ” Bate, 83, of Ogden, Utah passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois. He was born November 25, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Almon Birdell Bate and Helen Innes Bateman.
He was sealed for Time and All Eternity to the love of his life Roseann Thompson on January 19, 1954 in the Logan Utah LDS Temple. From that union they were blessed with six children, Cynthia (Craig) Gale, Provo; David (deceased); Michael (Debbie), Ogden; Pamela (Steven) Maughan, Highland; Paul (Kim), Alden, MN; and Peter, Ogden. He was also blessed with a rich posterity of 22 grandchildren and 17 plus great-grandchildren.
A.J. is survived by one brother, John (Jack). He was devoted to his family and extended family throughout his life and was dearly loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Larry; and one sister, Luana.
A.J. was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Following in his Father's and Uncles footsteps he served a mission in the Honolulu, Hawaii Mission. He also served as a temple worker in both the Oakland and Nauvoo Temples.
AJ was a passionate man who lived a rich and full life. He earned his Doctorate degree from the University of Utah. He worked for the Air Force helping to design airplane cockpits - SR71 and side viewing radar systems. He then worked for Bell Laboratories -AT&T designing computer systems and he worked at the Stanford Research Institute. He also taught at the Wright State University and Brigham Young University.
During his life he had many great accomplishments. Wherever he lived he was known for his beautiful voice. He had the wonderful opportunity to sing with the Tabernacle Choir. He also was an active sportsman. He enjoyed hunting and traveling with his family and hiking in many of the National Parks. He was also Golden Gloves Champion of the Intermountain West. He was also a member of the Ogden 4th/6th Ward basketball team which won the all church title. He also enjoyed dirt bike riding and snowmobiling into his late 70's.
The family will be celebrating his life on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at the Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd, Ogden, Utah. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. at the mortuary.
