August 31, 1948 – August 16, 2016
Dr. John Barron Taylor, 67, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at his home in Bear Lake, Idaho. He was born in Chester, South Carolina the son of Thomas DuRant and Francis Mills Taylor. John was raised in Chester and attended Presbyterian College to get his undergraduate degree. He then began his medical training at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. He completed an externship with the National Health Service in England before completing his training at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, in 1975. It was there that he met the love of his life, Colleen Crawford. They were married June 5, 1976. They settled in Kaysville in 1978 where he and Colleen opened Crestwood Medical Group, a medical practice serving the community for 30 years.
John was a well-respected physician during his tenure. He had a successful family practice and also practiced in the Davis Emergency Room for 10 years. He served as President of Crestwood Medical Group from 1978 to 2008. He was President of the Davis Medical Staff from 1982 to 1983. He then was President of Davis North Emergency Group from 1986 to 1988. He finished his hospital career as Moderator of the Board of Trustees from 1986 to 1989. He then left the Emergency Department and focused solely on his Family Practice. He had many patients that stayed with him throughout his practice, and children he saw from birth to their 30’s. When he retired in 2008 he bragged that his greatest achievement in medicine was never having a malpractice suit against him. After retirement he continued to study medicine, always interested in the latest updates and breakthroughs.
Outside of work John was very passionate about his family and skiing. He taught his children to ride bikes, horses, fix three-wheelers, wake board and talk their way out of trouble. He spent many Friday nights at Davis High football games and ballet recitals. He enjoyed their cabin at Bear Lake for 23 years, spending much of each summer keeping toys working and kids on the water. He taught them how to shoot guns, fireworks, take a corner on two wheels, and carry rocks up two flights of stairs. He skied for 35 years at Snowbird, skipping to the front of the line, and going till the last tram. He loved skiing fast, scaring tourists and having a drink with his best friend Mike. John also was an avid SCUBA diver, horseback rider, sailor and cowboy. John could regularly be seen on the weekend in his cowboy boots and hat, out in the pasture tending his Palomino horses.
