Dr. Harold Murray Carver
June 9, 1925 ~ March 20, 2016
Harold Murray Carver passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Sunday morning, March 20, 2016.
Murray, as he was known by all who knew him, was a loving son, sibling, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was born in Plain City on June 9, 1925 and raised in the Ogden area. After graduating from Weber High School as student body president, Murray enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1943 and served proudly in WWII as a radio communications specialist until 1946. He fought in the South Pacific, most notably landing on the first wave in the battle of Okinawa.
After returning from the war, Murray married his future life mate and high school sweetheart, Donna Allen. He attended both Weber State College and the University of Utah before his acceptance to the Los Angeles College of Optometry. Murray graduated magna cum laude in 1952 earning the degree, Doctor of Optometry. He enjoyed a very successful 48-year career as co-founder and partner of the Ogden Vision Center. He was a highly regarded leader in the profession serving as President of the Utah Optometric Association and in many hard fought legislative efforts. Murray was respected by his colleagues and loved by his many loyal patients.
Throughout his adult life, he was involved in numerous civic organizations including Jaycees, Elks, Sertoma, and the Exchange Club and served on many boards including the Ogden Golf and Country Club.
Murray lived life fully with many varied interests. Golf ranked among the top of these but he also enjoyed and mastered fly fishing, skiing, pool, bowling, ping-pong, and woodworking. There were few things he couldn’t fix or problems he couldn’t solve. Murray was accomplished in both Bridge and chess and loved to engage in nearly any game involving the mind.
Those many friends who were close to Murray knew him affectionately as “Mur”. He was a relentless tease and quick wit. Murray’s legendary sense of humor lasted to the very end of his life and has been gratefully passed on to his family. He was a model of kindness, generosity, and fairness in all his dealings. His was a life guided above all by integrity.
Murray is survived by his loving wife, Donna; his four sons, Craig, Dan, Allen, and Martin; daughters-in-law, Augusta, Debra, Patricia, and Regina; 10 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Susan Painter Carver; his brothers, Willard, Charles, and Marvin; his sisters, Irma and Florence; and his infant daughter, Karen.
The family would like to give special thanks to Richard Herold, M.D. and Emily Loflin, R.N. for their care and support.
