Duane Merle “Dude” McIntire
CLEARFIELD - Duane Merle “Dude” McIntire, age 85, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Tuesday, October 14, 2008.
He and his twin sister, Joan, were born minutes apart in an Olathe Colorado farmhouse on April 28, 1923, to Oliver S. McIntire and Frances M. McIntire. He loved Joan dearly and had a special relationship with her throughout his life.
He married his high school sweetheart Lois Virginia Smith December 20, 1943, in Santa Ana California in a double ceremony with his twin sister Joan and her husband Clay. Duane and Lois were sealed on December 4, 1963, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were blessed with five children, nine grandchildren, three step grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Duane lived in Long Beach California during his early school years and spent many hours at the beach with his brothers. He later attended junior high in Grand Junction Colorado, and graduated from Grand Junction High School in May of 1942. He enlisted in the United States Navy in October of 1942, and served two years overseas during WWII in the Pacific Theatre as a Pharmacist’s Mate Fist Class.
He resided in Clearfield for 62 years. He worked at the Naval Supply Depot as a medical store keeper and later owned a concrete contracting business. He was very proud of his work, and would take detours to point out the hard wrought monuments of his craft to family and friends.
Duane was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served as Bishop of the Clearfield 6th and 8th Wards, 1st Counselor in the Bishopric, Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, Ward and Stake Mission Leader, Primary Teacher, Sunday School Teacher and a Home Teacher.
He enjoyed caring for flowers and laboring in his yard and garden. He loved birds and animals and marveled at the beauties and wonders of nature. He had a special place in his heart for the holiday season, and warmed the hearts of others with his festive Christmas light display. He collected coins and stamps and enjoyed fishing.
He enjoyed traveling with his family, spending time near the Ocean, and returning time and time again to San Diego California.
Duane was an avid walker and left newfound friends and smiles wherever he went. His sense of humor was contagious, and he truly lived in the moment by enjoying every breath of life and every simple step he was blessed to take. He was optimistic and happy regardless of circumstances, and considered everyone his friend.
He is survived by his wife Lois of 64 years, Clearfield UT, his children Sheryl L. Grant (James A.), South Weber, UT, Deborah A Larkins (Michael R.), Draper, UT, David R.
