E. Bowen Lewis

1933-2021

Emery Bowen Lewis, 87, passed away on Saturday, January 23 in Layton, Utah. He was born May 20, 1933 in Kamas, Utah to Emery Lambert and Emma Hoyt Lewis. He was brought up in Marion and graduated from South Summit High School as the valedictorian of his class.

Bowen honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict period with deployment to Trieste, Italy.

He attended BYU, graduating with a bachelor degree in history and later earned his master’s degree. While attending BYU, he met the love of his life Maurine Bangerter. They were married June, 23, 1961 in the Salt Lake Temple and shared over 59 wonderful years together.

Bowen was a teacher and educator professionally. He taught history and later became an elementary school principal. He was known for his wisdom, fairness, hard work, leadership, problem solving and listening skills.

Bowen was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed various callings including serving at the Bountiful Temple. One of his choicest blessings was being able to go on three missions with Maurine. They served in Baltimore, Maryland; Guayaquil, Ecuador; and Chicago, Illinois. Bowen was generous with candy and gum allowances and was proud and supportive of the missionary service of his family.

Bowen had a dry, witty sense of humor, always ready with a quick joke. He had many interests including: basketball, travel, art, writing, budgeting, dancing, solving jigsaw puzzles, gardening and reading. He helped build his family home in Kaysville and was especially fond of his Volkswagen Rabbit. He was a sports enthusiast, always eager to follow the BYU Cougars.

Bowen was kind and expressed unconditional love through support, service and dependability. He attended a record breaking number of events and games for his posterity, many times providing transportation.

Bowen was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Nita (Ed) Burton, Kathleen (Neldon) Jacobson and his brother: J. Marvin Lewis. He is survived by his wife Venna Maurine Bangerter; and all ten of their children: Sandy (Dean) Harper, Lori Lewis (Andrea) Evans, Todd (Sheri) Lewis, Colette (Russell) Condie, Linda (Darryl) Walker, Caryn (Justin) Blackburn, Terrell (Tana) Lewis, Shane (Lisa) Lewis, Kent (Nichole) Lewis and Kevin (Debbie) Lewis. He was very proud of his 32 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers: F. Leon (Warda) Lewis, Lambert H. (Marilyn) Lewis and his sister in law Pat Lewis.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, January 28, at 2:00 pm at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N Fairfield Road, Layton, Utah. Prior to the funeral family may attend a viewing from 12:30 to 1:30 pm at the same location. Due to the pandemic, the viewing and funeral will be for family only. After services, the interment will be held at the Kaysville City Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Fairfield Village, Tender Care and the hospice nurses and aides who gave angelic care to Bowen over the last months of his life.
