Edward Burt Nielsen

July 21, 1933 – May 3, 2017

Edward Burt Nielsen passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City.

The oldest of six children, Ed was born on July 21, 1933 to Burt Lars Nielsen and Carolyn Anne Godnick in Twin Falls, Idaho. After graduating from Filer High School in Idaho he received his degree in Accounting.

Ed married Dixie Lee Bailey in the Idaho Falls Temple on July 15, 1952. They lived in the Twin Falls area where he worked as an accountant for Pacific Fruit.

After moving to Ogden he worked at Thiokol until accepting a job with First Security Bank. They later moved with their five children to Pendleton, Oregon where he began his career as a Franchise Business Owner. He loved law enforcement and pursued a second career as a Deputy Sheriff for the Umatilla Sheriff’s Dept. in Pendleton. He taught his children the importance of hard work and dedication in everything they did through his example.

A lifetime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ed served in the Young Men’s Presidency and in the Scouting program. He loved educating and sharing his love for hunting, fishing, and gun safety with the youth. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed many trips with his family, teaching them respect for wildlife, and the importance of family time. In retirement he especially enjoyed serving with Dixie Lee in their Ward Temple Sealing Group.

Ed had an insatiable love of talking with people and truly never met a stranger. He could be found starting a conversation with someone everywhere he went. He had a unique ability to find humor in all things, and shared that with everyone he met.

Ed is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dixie Lee Nielsen, sons Edward (Debbie) Nielsen, Randy (Janice) Nielsen, Tony (Carol) Nielsen, and daughters Kathryn (Dennis) Thyfault and Sherry (Michael) Wardell; brothers, Dennis (Marlene) Nielsen, Tim (Christy) Nielsen, Ken Nielsen and sister Janet (Jim) Herd; 15 grandchildren and 34 great- grandchildren. Ed was preceded in death by his parents Burt Nielsen and Anne Nielsen, brother Doug Nielsen and three great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the Drs. and staff at Ogden Regional Hospital as well as the caregivers at Promise Hospital in Salt Lake.
