Edward Judkins Hansen

April 14, 1923 –June 28 2014

A miracle occurred as our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, uncle and friend passed from this life Saturday, at age 91.  He can now breathe, walk, hear, and see. Ed was born April 14 1923, in Warren, UT. He was the 11 th child and 8 th son of Louis Alma Hansen and the 7 th child 5 th son of Sarah Evelyn Judkins. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He graduated from Weber High School in 1941 and joined the Marine Corps May 18, 1942 reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. During four years in the Pacific Campaign in World War II he served in the defense and capture of Guadalcanal and occupation of Munda, New Georgia Island, in the British Solomon Islands. He was honorably discharged May 18, 1946. We are very proud of the service he rendered to our great country.

He came home on leave and married Jean Abel of Elwood, UT in Tacoma, WA on February 10, 1945. Upon his return from the Pacific, they lived in Santa Ana, CA for 1-1/2 years. They returned to Utah and lived in Warren until 1951. They moved to Ogden where they have lived for 63 years. He also served in the Marine Reserves and the Utah National Guard. He has been a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles for many years.

Dad loved cars and began driving at age 11 taking his father to fulfill Home Teaching assignments. At age 14 he combined two Model-Ts to make one that was “soupped up.” From Warren he rode his horse to school and into the foothills of Ogden.

Dad played football and baseball for the Warriors. His favorite was football and he played the whole game; defensive end and center. In baseball he played catcher and continued with the Farm Bureau Wasatch Softball League for several years. Later on he took up bowling and his team succeeded in several tournaments. When he could no longer bowl because of back problems, he took up golf. One of his favorite places was the Ben Lomond Golf Course.

Dad was a successful farmer, mechanic and driver most of his life. He first drove for Allen’s Truck Lines and later for the “Cowboys and Indians,” that is Cowboy Oil on Apache Tank Lines. He drove all over the country, from Alaska to Texas and California to Iowa. He worked for Thiokol from 1960-1963 when he quit to run a Union 76 Gas Station located at the joining of Washington Blvd and Riverdale Road (now part of Lindquist Mortuary).

He enjoyed dancing and could two-step with the best. The last time he was able to dance without help was at his grandson’s (Derek’s) wedding. Dad was our “John Wayne.” He was the rough and tumble and tender-hearted hero of our lives. The last few years of his life were hard on him. He could not get around and do the things he longed to do. The last six months were among the very worst as he grew weaker almost every day until he could no longer move without the help of his family members and the hospice caretakers.

Edward is survived by his wife, Jean; his daughters, Terry Lee (Richard) Pratt of Clinton; Janis Bryant, and Vicki Stamps, both of Ogden; Brenda (Loring) Draper of Hooper; Jill (Gary) Splattstoesser of Kennewick, WA; and son, Brent E. (Kim) Hansen of Ogden; 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and a granddaughter, Ellen Jean Pratt.

The Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.  Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.

We want to thank Gentiva Hospice personnel for their loving care of our father during his last days.
