Elaine Fife Poll

Elaine Fife Poll, 97, joined Marlow, her eternal companion on January 5, 2018.  She was born August 20, 1920, the oldest daughter of Florence Jardine and Adrian Fife.  Her young life was a full and productive one.  She graduated from Weber High School, served as Student Body Secretary, a member of the Pep Club and was crowned “Miss Weber.”  She perfected her musical talent on the violin, performed with a string quartet on stage at the Egyptian Theater in Ogden, played dinner music in a trio for banquets held in the Hotel Ben Lomond ballroom, performed over KLO radio, and won awards while participating in various music festivals.  Elaine’s name appeared on many programs for violin solos at funerals as an adult.

Elaine married Marlow Vernon Poll on December 14, 1938 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.  They were a devoted couple and were together for just one month short of 70 years.  Marlow passed away on November 5, 2008.

She set an example of continuous service and unconditional love.  Service to family, friends, neighbors and church was her lifetime accomplishment.  Friends of her children were always welcome.  Those visits often resulted in overnighters.  Visitors seldom left her home throughout her adult life without receiving homemade refreshments or at least a piece of candy at the door.  Elaine was the “go-to” person for keeping track of important family history data and keeping in touch with extended family members.  She kept her mind active.  She took lessons and learned to play the organ at the age of 58.

She and Marlow were a couple that worked and played together.  They lived most of their married life in South Weber, Utah.  Marlow was a dairy farmer.  Elaine worked alongside Marlow and the hired help during harvest season.  She was a good sport.  She often rode a horse into the Uintahs with Marlow and their friends during deer hunting season.

Elaine served faithfully in various Auxiliaries of the Church in Ward and in Stake callings.  While serving as Relief Society President, she and her counselors worked tirelessly on service projects and huge ward bazaars.  She served in several positions in both Camp and on the Company Board of The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.  Elaine and Marlow served together in the Ogden LDS Temple.  Most importantly, she was a dedicated mother to five children.  Her unconditional love convinced each that they were the favorite.

She is survived by sisters, Marilyn Tubbs (LeRoy), West Weber; Colleen Francis (Robert), South Ogden; brother Gordon Fife, Riverside, CA; children, Lynda Dastrup (Douglas), Phoenix, AZ; Reed (Lana – deceased), South Weber; Barbara Mason (Kent-deceased), Eagle, ID; Doug (Rolayne), Clinton; Vern (Karen), Clinton; 17 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her husband Marlow, daughter-in-law Lana Poll, son-in-law, Kent Mason, grandson Travis Poll and great-granddaughter, Presley Mason.  A special thank you to her son, Reed, for making possible that she could live independently in her own home throughout her 97 years.  Our Matriarch will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the South Weber 1st Ward Church, 1401 East South Weber Drive, South Weber.  Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., Ogden.
