Elizabeth "Betty" Hinckley Nibley 1921 ~2010
OGDEN a" Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend returned to her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, her father''s 119th birthday.
The following was taken from autobiographical notes written by Betty in 1996:
"My life began in Ogden, Utah. Our family lived in Mt. Pleasant in the John H. Seely home. My mother was concerned that the confusion of a birth at home would be too much for her mother, Margaret Peel Seely, who was ill. So mother brought Robert, Jr. and came to stay with her husband''s parents, Edwin S. and Adelaide Hinckley, in Ogden. I was born in the old Dee Hospital to Abrelia Seely Hinckley and Robert Henry Hinckley. We moved to Ogden from Mt. Pleasant when I was six years old. I attended Ogden schools and graduated from Ogden High School in 1939.
We had a warm, secure, fun, confusing life in our old Victorian home with a sleeping porch, coal furnace, lots of stairs, and one bathroom. Life with three red-headed brothers was never dull.
I graduated from the University of Utah in 1943 with a B.A. degree in Education. I looked forward to teaching but had the good fortune to meet a handsome engineer, Preston Parkinson Nibley, from Stanford University at Christmas, 1941. We were married September 18, 1943 and later were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple.
Our first home was San Francisco, California. It was the time of World War II. In January, 1944, Pres was sent on a wartime job to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada. I went to live with my parents who were then living in New York City. Four months later, I joined Pres in Whitehorse. He had found me a job as a waitress in the mess hall so we could be together. In the spring of 1945 we moved to Palo Alto, California.
I thought this was our final move but Pres'' career as a petroleum engineer took us to Scarsdale, NY; Beirut, Lebanon; London, England; Seattle, WA; and Newtown, PA.
We were blessed with three wonderful daughters and their families: Bonnie (Hugh) Cannon, Susan Nibley Isom, and Carolyn Nibley Sukhan. We have 16 grandchildren and each one is very special to us. (Betty now has 30 great-grandchildren.)
Although I moved reluctantly to new homes, looking back I recognized that the variety of experiences I had during those years had added greatly to my life. I learned much. We made many friends who will always be our friends.
When Pres retired in 1982, we moved to Ogden so we could have time with my father in his last years.
We built a country ''gathering place'' in Eden, Utah. We celebrated our golden anniversary in 1993. My best decision in life was to marry Pres. We count our blessings!"
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Abrelia Hinckley and her brothers, Robert, Jr., John, and Paul Hinckley.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 12 at 11 a.m. at the Shadow Ridge Ward Chapel, 1401 Country Hills Drive in Ogden, with Bishop Brett Muse officiating.
Family members will visit with friends at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday at the Ward Chapel from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Interment, C.W. Nibley plot in the Logan City Cemetery.
