Ellen Bernice Horne

Ellen Bernice Phillips Horne''s final dream came true as she graciously left her home in Kaysville, Utah and returned to her eternal partner, Richard Meyer Horne Mostly commonly called Dick, to their Heavenly home on May 14, 2010. Bernice was born on March 2, 1929 and raised by loving parents, Ardelle William Phillips and Barbara Ellen Denison in Farmington, Utah. Bernice was married in the Manti Temple to her best friend and adoring admirer, Dick, on February 22, 1950. Trena Horne (Larry) Dodge of Franktown, Colorado; Dixie Jane Horne (Roy) Wilson of Huntsville, Alabama; Lee Richard (Kathy) Horne of Mount Juliet, Tennessee; and Jay Dee (Julie) Horne of Layton, Utah were blessed to have her as a loving, nurturing mother.

Her passing was unexpected. Bernice has had a minor cough for a couple of years now. In the beginning of May she had some pain in her right wrist which began to spread to her shoulder and back. She saw the doctor three times the week of 3-6 May. On Thursday, May 6th, following an MRI, she was informed that she had cancer in her right lung and in her neck. She told the family on Friday morning, May 7th, insisting that she was fine and no one should come out to be with her. Of course her family ignored her and made preparations to come. On Saturday, May 9th, was her last evening of enjoyment. She spent it playing games with family. On Sunday the cancer speedily overtook her body, each day taking a little more life from her. By Wednesday she went to bed never to rise again. She slept a lot. She did rally for moments when visitors came. She was aware of what was going on around her, often joining a conversation without opening her eyes. She recognized people, including in-laws and great-grandchildren right up to the last day. Ray, her brother, visited on the afternoon of Friday, May 14th, and she recognized him, but continued to slip further away. That evening, at 8:34 p.m., she quietly left our presence with all her children around her. She emulated beauty through her beloved garden, which she shared with everyone. Because of Bernice''s quick smile and joyful nature, those she met became her friend. Each individual whose life she touched left knowing they were "SO SPECIAL."

Bernice treasured each member of her family and on any given occasion could be found serving bottomless ice-cream cones, playing games at the kitchen table, putting together puzzles, singing songs, taking walks, digging in her flower garden, and showing off the lasts family pictures on her wall. If you have been lucky enough to be in her home, you have felt the loving bond between Bernice and her family. She always had a way of bringing loved ones together. Bernice served in various leadership positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life. She found great joy as an ordinance worker in the Ogden Temple with her beloved husband and for over 20 years has quietly prepared names for sacred temple ordinances through the extraction program.

She is now happily reunited with her parents, husband, two brothers, Dellas and Max (Barbara) Phillips, and her sister Cleo Phillips (Tom) Ramage. She is watching over her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her remaining siblings, Ray (Barbara) Phillips, Barbara Phillips Bybee, and Lucy Phillips (Max) Petersen and her special friend, Glen Elder. Her legacy of love will continue to grow through her four children and their spouses, 21 grandchildren and spouses, 38 great-grandchildren with more to come.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the LDS Chapel located at 555 N. 100 E. in Kaysville, UT. Friends may visit family on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Kaysville Mortuary, 400 N. Main Street and Wednesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
