Elmer Jay Cuthbert
SYRACUSE - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Elmer Jay Cuthbert, 88, returned home to his Heavenly Father on Sunday, March 15, 2009. He was born March 4, 1921 in Brigham City, Utah, the son of Kenneth C. and Evaline Olsen Cuthbert. He married his sweetheart Gloria Eva Warren on October 29, 1943 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Jay had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and the Gospel of the LDS Church and spent his life serving Him and others. He had served in many capacities including: member of the Bishopric of the Syracuse 1st Ward, leader of the Teacher and Priest Quorums, Scout volunteer and High Priest group member. Jay and Gloria were ordinance workers in the Ogden Temple for 13 years, and both were assistant directors in the Syracuse Genealogy program.
Jay served in the US Navy during World War II. He retired from Hill Air Force Base after 35 years, then drove school bus in Davis County for 12 years. He was also a member of the Syracuse Lions. Jay was the consummate "go-to fix everything" guy. He had the ability to figure out the best way to fix anything or start from scratch to build something wonderful as he did in building their home. He enjoyed the intricacies of cutting out fretwork and sharing it with others. Jay loved to fish! Jay and Gloria traveled extensively both in their travel trailer and with groups making friends wherever they went.
Surviving are his wife Gloria, daughter Patricia (Robert D.) Mabey, Bountiful, grandson Sean Mabey, great-granddaughter, Jolei, Oahu, Hawaii and a sister Zelda Penskofer, Redding, CA. Preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Stephen Jay and Bryan Warren Cuthbert.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Syracuse 1st Ward, 750 So. 2500 W. Friends and family may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary and Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
