Elmer O’dell Smith, 90 passed away on Friday September 2, 2011 after a battle with Alzheimer’s.
He was born to the late Elmer H. Smith and Rosella Calder Smith on July 11, 1921 in Fish Haven, Idaho.
O’dell graduated from Paris High School in 1940. Due to the death of his father he then worked the family ranch in Bear Lake, Idaho.
He married his high school sweetheart, Helen Hansen Smith on June 26, 1941 in the Logan LDS Temple. They moved to Ogden in 1950 and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
O’dell worked for Baggs Oil Company and JW Brewer. He became a highly awarded electrical engineer for Hill Air Force Base where he retired in 1986.
He and Helen enjoyed retirement while working summers in Yellowstone National Park and traveling to Arizona for the winter. Later they enjoyed their winters in St. George with many dear friends. They also have many wonderful memories from time spent at their summer home in Bear Lake.
O’dell was an active member of The Church of Latter Day-saints where he held many positions within.
He loved to bowl, golf, ballroom dance and travel with family and friends. Some of their travels took them to Israel, Hawaii, Alaska and Mexico.
O’dell is survived by his beloved wife Helen, and their two children: Michael O. Smith and his wife Judy, of South Weber; and Penny Toliver and her husband Myles (Bud) of Ogden. Also survived by 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren along with his brothers, Kent Smith ( Colleen) and Kay Smith (Jackie) of Salt Lake City.
He was preceded in death by one sister, June and his brother Dean.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday September 7, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
Family will meet with friends on Wednesday at 9:45 a.m. at the mortuary prior to the services.
Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
