Elvie D. Larsen

Elvie D. Larsen LAYTON – Elvie D. Larsen (Papa), 91, died peacefully, Saturday, January 10 2009 at his home in Layton. He was born on December 11, 1917 in Glenwood, Utah to Hans Peter and Ida Petersen Larsen. Elvie was the 5th of 8 children. He was raised in Glenwood. While growing up he spent a lot of time with his very special grandfather Paul Christian Petersen. He loved working with his grandfather and learned the value of hard work from him. Elvie married his sweetheart, Amy Alleen Jensen (Nana) on June 8, 1939 in the Manti, Utah Temple. Elvie then joined the Marine Corp. He served beside his fellow Americans in the 5th Marine Division when the United States captured the island of Iwo Jima, Japan, during some of the fiercest fighting in the Pacific Campaign of World War II. Elvie worked as a carpenter at Hill Air Force Base and retired after many years. He took such pride in his work. He built the family home and laid the beautiful rock where his family lived with him since 1959. It was so fitting that he passed in the home that he put all of his hard work and love into. He belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully and diligently in all his callings. He and Alleen served a mission to Arizona in 1991. Elvie and Alleen were married for 54 years and raised six children. He was a very hard, dedicated worker and had a great love for his garden. He was especially proud of his walnut trees. He shared all the wonderful food that he grew in his garden with his family and neighbors. His grandchildren loved to tour his garden with him and sample all the fresh fruits and vegetables. Elvie will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a sweet, caring and humble man, who always set a wonderful example for those he loved. He will always stand as a rock in our heart and memories. Elvie is survived by his children Mary Ellen Stephens (John), Anaconda, MT; Shan Larsen, Springdale, UT; Pat James (Joe), Layton; Harv Larsen (Susie), Layton; Debbie Singleton (Brett), Citrus Heights, CA; and Tami Larson (Perry) Kaysville; 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Alleen Larsen, parents Hans Peter and Ida Larsen and his siblings Lee Harold Larsen, Lorenzo H. Larsen, Josephine Dennison, Vivian Larsen, Jay P. Larsen, Rainey Bridges and Lola Boyce. Elvie (Papa) will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He has made a lasting impact on all of our lives. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Valley View Ward Chapel, 2455 Valley View Drive, Layton. Friends and family may call Monday from 6 to 8 pm at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Tuesday from 9:45 to 10:45 am at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton where he will be laid to rest next to his eternal companion, Alleen.
