EmmaJean “Jean” Samuelson Brooks
Our beloved, sweet mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, EmmaJean (Jean) Samuelson Brooks, 87, returned home to our Heavenly Father and was reunited with her sweetheart “Freddie” on Friday October 13, 2023.
Jean was born September 1, 1936 in Bountiful, Utah to Alva Floyd Samuelson and Elva Rebecca Porter. She grew up in Pocatello, Idaho. When she was a teenager, she and her family moved to Southern Utah and there met Frederick (Fred) Earl Brooks where they became high school sweethearts.
Fred and Jean were married September 4, 1953 in Hawthorne, Nevada. Their union was later solemnized for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 25, 1962.
When she and Fred were first married, they lived in El Paso, Texas where they were stationed at Fort Bliss after Fred enlisted in the U.S. Army. They later moved to Layton, Utah where they raised four children. She was a stay-at-home mom until her kids were in school and then she worked as a school cook for many years at various schools within the Davis School District. She loved to cook and continued to substitute in school kitchens across the district even after her retirement in June, 1999.
Jean always cooked enough for an army even at home. Quite often she had leftovers to feed her kid's friends, to give to others, and to go into the freezer for later. Jean also enjoyed crocheting, cross-stitching, and RVing with her husband.
Fred and Jean were married for 52 years before he passed away on December 30, 2005.
She loved being a mom, grandma, great-grandma and serving others. Jean loved to go for walks in her neighborhood and she always had treats in her pocket for her furry friends along the way. She loved visiting with people and had a quick, witty sense of humor. She loved to crochet blankets and other items to give to others.
Jean was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Fred, her son John Floyd, her granddaughter Kiersten Petersen, her son-in-law Doug Petersen, two brothers, Larry and Lee Roy Samuelson, and two sisters, Ruth Hudach and Raleen Ames.
Jean is survived by her daughters Brenda K. Petersen, Jane (Loren) Jephson, her son Allen P. (Catharine) Brooks, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brother Duane (Darlene) Samuelson, sister Marian Hughes and sister-in-law Sharon Samuelson.
The family also wishes to express a sincere and heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Peaks at Clinton Memory Care for their loving and tender care of our mom while she battled dementia.
