Enid C. Poorte
Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, Enid C. Poorte, 88, returned to her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 after a ten year struggle with Alzheimer’s. She was surrounded by family who loved her dearly, and her passing is bitter sweet. She has been relieved of her earthly affliction that stole her from us many years ago, but we will still miss her. She was a kind, gentle daughter of our Heavenly Father, and it can be said that she was loved by everyone who crossed her path.
Enid was born on November 5, 1922 in Eden, Utah to William L. and Ada Ann Chambers. She was just a toddler when her parents moved to Ogden, where her father opened up his own blacksmith shop. She attended Lorin Farr Elementary, Central Jr. High, and Ogden High School, graduating in 1941. She was vice president of the L.D.S. seminary her senior year.
Enid’s first paying job was working as a clerk at S.H. Kress & Co., a five and dime retail department store in Ogden. She then worked for Commercial Security Bank as a bank teller. She later enjoyed working as a secretary for 29 years at Horace Mann Elementary, where she befriended many a child and many a teacher. Her favorite “job”, however, was being a wife to her husband and a mother to their three children.
Enid was walking down the street one afternoon with her grandmother and was spotted by Thomas H. Poorte who was home on medical leave recuperating from a gunshot wound sustained while fighting in Guam. He decided right then that he would marry her, which he did on March 15, 1946 in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple. They have been married for 65 years. They lived in Ogden for 52 years in their “beginner” home before relocating to North Ogden.
Enid loved her family and was dedicated to making home a happy, peaceful place to live for her husband and children. She kept an immaculate home and looked forward to decorating it on every holiday. At Christmas, every room in the house was decorated, even the bathroom. She enjoyed attending boutiques where she managed to pick up just one more decoration that she thought would look great in a special place in the house. She enjoyed holidays even more when she was preparing activities to do with her grandchildren.
Enid was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully until Alzheimer’s prevented her from doing so. She served in all organizations and was a Relief Society president twice. She enjoyed every calling but especially loved working with the youth. She and Tom served as temple workers in the Ogden Temple. She always told Tom that she would go on a mission anywhere in the world with him as long as she could sleep in her own bed every night. They were called to the Utah North Mission and she slept in her own bed every night! Enid gave her all when serving her Father in Heaven and was truly one of his chosen daughters.
Enid is survived by her husband Thomas, two daughters, Adele Poorte, Carol (Victor) Crowther, a daughter-in-law Kathleen Poorte, five granddaughters, Jenny (Rodney) Halladay, Lisa Poorte, Alisha Crowther, Michelle (Patrick) Corrigan, Stephanie Crowther, two great-grandaughters, Tiffany and Tristan Halladay and many grand pets that she loved.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters, and son Brent T. Poorte.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit family on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.
Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
Our family would like to express our appreciation to Crestwood Care Center for the high quality of care Enid received while living there for the last two years. We wanted her home but were grateful knowing that she was being watched over by caring people. A special thanks also goes to Jolene Oyler, a niece, who helped us in caring for mom.
