Ernest Briggs Millgate, 89, passed away Friday, October 30, 2015.
He was born June 22, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Ernest Edward and Ruby Briggs Millgate.
Ernest was a veteran of World War II. He served in the Pacific and was honorably discharged with full honors from the Navy on June 5, 1946. Recently he was able to go on Utah Honor Flight.
On October 6, 1945, Ernest married his high school sweetheart, Irene Johanson. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She preceded him in death September 28, 2011.
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in the Bishopric, High Council, and Sunday School in the West Point Wards.
He retired from Hill Air Force Base. Ernest served on the West Point City Council and the Jaycees.
He was a great role model. He taught youth groups and was an educator at heart. He was kind and always had time to answer a question or solve a problem, no matter how small. He taught his family to enjoy the ruggedness of the outdoors, the beauty of nature. He always loved hunting and fishing.
Ernest is survived by his children, Carol Derry, Peggy Jean (Doug) Mathis, Lori Everett, Ernie Millgate, Jr., 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, daughter, Erlynn Millgate, great-grandson, Jarom Nelson, son-in-law, Rick Derry, brother, Bill Millgate and sister, Shirley Millgate.
The family would like to thank the staff at Family Tree.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday November 6, 2015 at the West Point 16thWard Chapel, 300 North 4500 West. The family will meet with friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
