Ernest William “Ernie” Muller, 83, passed away peacefully of natural causes in his Layton home early the morning of August 30, 2024.

Ernie was born on August 29, 1941, in East Marlboro Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and was later legally adopted by Gertrude L. Brunt and William A. Muller.

He attended Springfield Township High School, graduating in 1960. Ernie loved to golf and was very, very good at it. He was working on becoming a pro when he was drafted into the United States Navy. Ernie served for over 20 years, retiring as an Operations Specialist Second Class (Petty Officer Second Class) on January 1, 1991, having served during the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Shield. Ernie was an Electronics Specialist and served faithfully in Naval Carrier Combat Groups.

Ernie married Elaine Ferguson on August 26, 1996, and the couple lived in Salt Lake and Taylorsville before retiring together to Layton, Utah.

After the Navy, Ernie continued pursuing golf excellence, being listed as a Retired Golf Pro in his Alumni Directory. He also spent over a decade driving tour buses and various university sports teams throughout the Intermountain West.

Ernie and Elaine loved trips to Wendover together, relaxing with family, going to concerts and watching TV movies together.

Ernie also enjoyed gymnastics as a youth and maintained his flexibility into his later years. He loved the beauty of nature and will be fondly remembered for his patience, understanding, compassion, and his quiet dignity.

Ernie is survived by his wife of 28 years, Elaine F. Muller, Layton; children, Lora and Billy; bonus kids, Becky, Shaunna, LaMar, and Patricia; and numerous grandchildren, but he had a special relationship with his granddaughter, Amber House.

He was preceded in death by all of his parents, and it is believed that he outlived any biological siblings.

Graveside services with military honors for close family and friends were held on Monday, September 9, 2024, at Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park, Bluffdale, Utah.

Our family wishes to thank the staff of Rocky Mountain Hospice for their kindness and care of our beloved “Ernie.” We also wish to give special thanks to the generous support of the Chapel Hills Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
