Ethel L. Petersen
OGDEN – Ethel Lillias Lundahl Petersen passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2010 in the arms of her children at Legacy House Assisted Living. She was preceded in death by her husband Reed L. Petersen on December 26, 1992.
Ethel was born in Ely, Nevada on July 30, 1915 to Henry and Ebba Larsen Lundahl, LDS converts from Sweden. Ethel, as a child, lived with her family in Ogden until she was nine years old at which time her family moved to Logan, Utah where she lived until she and her high school sweetheart, Reed L. Petersen, were married in the Logan LDS Temple on April 15, 1936, and then moved to Ogden.
Ethel graduated from Logan High School where she was a class officer. She met her high school sweetheart, Reed, who was an athlete and class officer at South Cache High School and they had a “commute” courtship between Logan and Hyrum. While she was a senior in high school in 1933, and for two more years, Ethel was the vocalist with the dance band at The Dansante (dance hall) in Logan.
She and Reed moved to Ogden when they married, and they lived the remainder of their years there with their family and many, many friends. Ethel excelled in everything she did. Her home was a warm and beautiful place, always ready for friends and family. She was admired for her cooking and entertaining. She always had homemade cookies in the cookie jar and she crocheted many beautiful afghans for her family. She created many fine needlepoint and stitchery treasures.
Ethel was an active member of the Aglaia (president) and Chareya Clubs for over 50 years. She was a member of the Ogden Golf and Country Club where she was an avid golfer for many years and served as President of the Women’s Golf Association. She was an excellent card player and loved to play with her family and friends. She played in several bridge clubs with many dear friends.
She had an absolutely beautiful singing voice and sang solos for many years for civic and social clubs, church meetings and funerals. She sang for 12 years with the Celeste Singers of Ogden where she enjoyed the talents and friendships of her singing companions.
Always busy and a hard worker, she did volunteer work for years at the Roy Care Center styling the lady patients’ hair for them. Many people would be surprised to know that this elegant, gorgeous woman was as much at home working with Reed in the wheat fields of their Idaho farm, as she was in the finest of surroundings and traveling abroad.
She was a member of the Shadow Ridge Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Ethel is survived by the following children: Dixie (Bruce) Jackson and grandchildren, Joni (Jim) Chandler, Ryan Shurtleff and Steven Shurtleff; Robert Reed (Janet) Petersen and grandchildren, Darci (Todd) Stapley, Shelly (Dana) Petersen, Gina (Mark) Young; Curtis Petersen and grandchildren, Cassie Petersen and Rayce Petersen. Also survived by dear sisters, Lenora Baird and Nadine Bauer, and 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two infant children, her parents and the following sisters, Thelma Olsen, Florence (John) Kariger and RaNee Taggart.
Special thanks to her wonderful, loving caregiver Christel Smith and her tender IHC Hospice nurse, Vicki, both of whom showered love on Ethel and her family.
