Ethel L. Richey
OGDEN – Ethel Lloyd Richey, 96, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, November 5, 2008, surrounded by loved ones. Ethel was born in Central, Idaho, the sixth and only surviving child born to Charles A. and Zena Conner Lloyd. While Ethel was a premature baby and not expected to survive, her parents rejoiced with each day she continued to live. This happiness, however, was tempered by her mother’s failing health and death just three weeks after Ethel’s birth. For the first year of her life, Ethel was passed around from aunt to aunt to care for, until her father remarried, and her stepmother raised Ethel as her own daughter. The family later moved to Farmington, Utah where Ethel attended school in Davis County, graduating from Davis High School. She went on to attend nursing school at the LDS School of Nursing in Salt Lake. She worked as a Registered Nurse in Utah, Oregon, Nevada, and California.
She married Homer P. Richey on June 20, 1940 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they reared ten children. In 1982, she and her husband served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York City.
Ethel was a faithful member of the LDS Church, serving in many capacities, and raised her children in a loving, gospel-oriented home. She faithfully attended the temple on a regular basis, as long as her health permitted. She was a lifelong member of The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Ethel loved traveling to many parts of the world with her husband, and then later with other family members. Germany, England, Korea, Brazil, Egypt, Israel, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mexico, Guatemala, and India were some of the many places Ethel had the opportunity to travel and explore.
She is survived by all ten of her children: Margaret (Dan) Workman, Roswell, GA; Charles (Bette) Richey, Kennewick, WA; Stephen (Georgia) Richey, Ogden, UT; Virginia (Tom) Ricks, Mount Vernon, MO: Preston (Sue) Richey, Pleasant View, UT; Irene (Rich) Matthies, Bellevue, WA; Louise Nelson, St. George, UT; Blaine (Laurie) Richey, Ogden, UT; David Richey, Salt Lake City, UT; and Catherine (Craig) Larsen, Sandy, UT. She leaves behind 44 grandchildren and 79 great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Ina (Clark) Cheney, Kaysville, UT and Edith Shifflett, Fruit Heights, UT, along with one sister-in-law, Marie (L. Reed) Lloyd also survive her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a great-grandson, and three brothers.
The family would like to thank all the many family and extended family members who, along with loving and compassionate caregivers, cared for our mother in her final weeks.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Kingston Ward Chapel, 1425 Kingston Drive, with Bishop Paul Crookston presiding. Friends may call at the Kingston Ward Chapel on Saturday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
