EVAN PETER LYMAN

1930 -2019

Our beloved Father and friend passed away peacefully on 25 Feb 2019 at the home of his son John where he had been cared for the past two years. He had just turned 89.  After his dear wife’s passing on March 29, 2016 he experienced several falls and needed watchful care. His son John and wife Tami took Evan into their home. Every night he thanked those who helped him that day.  During the past nine months he was not able to walk but would spend the day in his chair in the front room surrounded by family. When possible he attended special events and Birthday dinners of his children and grandchildren.  However, since early February he become less responsive. The days before his passing he had family at his side and enjoyed the visits of many children and grandchildren.

Evan was born to Thomas Callister Lyman and Florence Vern Nielson in Oak City, Utah on February 8th, 1930.  He grew up enjoying the desert and mountains that surrounded Oak City. He is remembered as hiking Fools Creek Peak barefoot at a young age.  His family moved to Sunset when we was 11 and he attended Davis High School.

He served as a missionary to the Southern States Mission.  While on this mission he met and later married his first wife Mary Ethel Morrison.  They were married in the Logan Temple on June 4th, 1952. They had four children Spencer, Melinda, John and LeAnn.  They raised their family in Clearfield, Utah. They divorced and Evan then married Pamela Elizabeth Hobbs on December 22nd 1983 and later were sealed in the Ogden Temple.  With Pam his family blended to include Susan, Mark, Jayne and Nathan. Evan and Pam then moved to Roy, Utah.

Shortly after being married and in 1952 he was called to serve in the US Army’s heavy mortar infantry company for the Korean War.  From basic training at Fort Ord, CA he was transferred to Fort Benning, GA. After leaving the Army he joined the Air Force Reserves until 1961.  During this time he completed an Accounting Degree from Georgia State College of Business. He worked as an accountant for many years. Then after returning to Utah he worked as a loan officer, made a go of Real Estate, then worked his way from accountant to general plant manager at Karman Kitchens in Murray, Utah.  Lastly, he work with his brother, Dilworth at Burton-Lyman Tax Services until he retired in 2016 at the age of 86.

His life centered around his family, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and camping.  He served in many callings from Bishop, Clerk, High councilor and Scout Master. He was responsible for church chapel renovations in Georgia and Clearfield, Utah.  He meet several Apostles and named his first son after Spencer Kimball. Youth and Scouting was a main focus and passion. Through Scouting, he helped many boys learn wilderness skills and characteristics befitting future fathers and men. He shared his Scouting skills to all and helped many young men and women including his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren learn wilderness skills and a love and respect for the great outdoors.

All of us remember fishing with Grandpa Lyman.  He enjoyed the Unitas. He spent many summers backpacking and fishing around Henrys Fork Lake at the base of Kings Peak. In his later years, Evan and Pam could be found at Lilly Lake or China Meadows during the summer.   Much of his fishing time was spent fixing the tangles of fishing line for his grandkids while they used his pole to catch dinner.

The family would like to thank South Davis Home Health who provided hospice care that lightened our load and helped Evan be comfortable.  Special thanks to the dad’s senior companion, Dave Cherchio, for his many hours of dedication and friendship.

Evan is preceded in death by his parents, four siblings, a grandson and his dear wife, Pamela. He is survived by his brother Dilworth Lyman and eight children, 40 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren:
