Evelyn Lavern Wiggins, Utah Educator, passed away on December 10, 2014 in Ogden, Utah.  She was born on September 14, 1925 in Ogden, Utah the daughter of Francis T. and Lucy Wilkinson Wiggins.  She attended Ogden City Schools and earned as A.S. Degree from Weber State and B.S. and M.S. degrees from Utah State University.  She did doctoral work at the University of Nebraska.

Evelyn began her teaching career in Ogden at the Mound Fort and Taylor Elementary Schools.  She accepted a position at Utah State University’s Edith Bowen Laboratory School in 1956 where she taught 6 th graders.  She was promoted Assistant Professor of Elementary Education in 1959, and taught Language Arts.  Later she became Coordinator of Elementary Student Teaching.  She continued in this position for 30 years until her retirement in 1986.

Her classes and workshops for teachers were popular in Box Elder and the Uintah Basin.  At Weber State she coordinated the combined Master’s Degree Program.  In 1981 Evelyn was recognized by the USU College of Education Council as “The Outstanding Woman Professor in the College of Education”.

In the summer of 1978, Evelyn was selected by the U.S. Office of Education to be a member of a study group to Egypt for Utah schools. During her career she was a member of many professional groups.  She served on state curriculum and she was president of Beta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

Throughout her life, Evelyn was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 33 rd and Taylor Canyon Wards.  She served many times as the ward development leader and many years as a Sunday School and Primary teacher.

In 1981 she was called to serve as an ordinance worker in the Ogden LDS Temple.  She served for eight years and was group trainer and later supervisor.

Evelyn loved ballet and opera and was a longtime member of the Ogden Symphony and Ballet Association.  She was also an avid sports fan and attended games at Utah State and Weber State University.

Survivors include her sister, Francine Wiggins of Ogden and nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Kathryn Lund and Verna May Larkin.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Taylor Canyon Ward, 1643 26 th St., Ogden, with Bishop Taylor Newman officiating.  Friends may call at the ward Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.  Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.  Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
