On August 18, 2024, Evelyn Zundel passed away peacefully in her sleep after experiencing some complications from getting older.
She was born to Eva Lucita Hess and Welling Zundel on October 8, 1931, in Plymouth, UT. She was the fourth daughter with one more sister coming a few years later. She had a wonderful relationship with her parents and siblings, Barbara (Jess) Holmes, Donna (Lee) Hunter, Nola (Melvin) Warner, and Joann (Russell) Passey. All of her sisters, except Joann, have preceded her in death.
Evelyn lived her life in Ogden, Utah. She was in the same neighborhood and ward for most of her life. She was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She attended BYU and received an associate degree in education. She served two missions: one as a younger sister in Sacramento, California, and one in Palmyra, NY as an elderly sister. She loved serving the Lord in any way she could. She had callings in leadership, teaching, playing the piano, working with the youth, etc. She always had a calling in her ward or stake until she advanced to her 90’s. She worked in the Ogden Temple for many years, secretary in the mission home in Ogden, and in several service missions as well,
Evelyn worked for BYU as an executive secretary and helped run and organize the educational classes that the church offered in Ogden. She loved her job and worked diligently at it. She went to work each day dressed as a professional and acted like one. She worked there for 25+ years, and it was just like serving another mission for her.
She was not seen in her home without her scriptures by her. She was always reading, but especially loved the Book of Mormon. She had a wonderful ward family that she would gather to have Family Home Evening every Sunday. These women were her study friends --- Jilene, Robin, Celia, Norma, Lillian, and Barbara --- just to name a few, but also loved so many sisters in her ward and neighborhood. When Evelyn moved into a care center these sisters would continue to pick her up each Sunday and take her to their ward. It was the only ward she wanted to attend.
Evelyn moved into a care center where her sister, Joann, lived. They were two doors down from each other. Ev had her sight and could walk but could not remember everything where Joann was using a walker or wheelchair, couldn’t see and hear very well, but had her memory. So, between them, they had what they needed. Ev would read the scriptures and newspaper to Joann, and Joann would pick her up to eat their meals. Evelyn liked all the residents at Avamere. She would go around the cafeteria and hallways saying hello to everyone she could find.
Evelyn was the best aunt to all her nieces and nephews. We were all so blessed to have her as our aunt and have her live at our grandma’s house. She would take us everywhere and was always around for dinners and parties. We could go to the BYU center on a weekend with her, go to get ice cream, go to the Stake Farm for a carnival, go on amazing drives with her car full of children. In some sense, we were her hobbies and her interests. We all felt her love and thought she loved “me” best! We, her nieces and nephews were all lucky to be able to serve her when the time came that she could not drive or take care of herself completely. We rotated through her life the last months; each taking care of her needs and wants on an assigned daily basis. She was so sweet and congenial with us. She was funny and feisty, and we all adored her. It is hard to think of this world without Evelyn in it!
We want to thank Avamere staff for loving Evelyn (she was quite popular there!) and also Inspirational Hospice that took very good care of her. We want to thank her nieces and nephews who were dedicated to her during her time in the care center. They had eyes on her each day. Her family and friends will truly miss her!
