Fasi M. Filiaga

Fasi M. Filiaga, 83, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2017. He was born on June 4, 1933 in Western Samoa to William and Mei Filiaga. In 1957, he came to the United States to stay with his sister in Hollywood, California. Six months later, as a British citizen, he was drafted in the US Army. After basic training, he received orders to go to Germany where he met his sweetheart Johanna Schuler. They were married on September 17, 1960 in Germany. Their vows were later solemnized in the Switzerland LDS Temple.
He served in the US Army for 22 years in many capacities, including Drill Instructor and Transportation Support System Specialist. He mastered driving and repair of wheeled and track vehicles. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star while serving in Vietnam. He also received numerous awards and certificates for his service. After he retired from the military in 1980, he moved his family to Ogden, Utah, where he worked for the Dialysis Center repairing equipment, owned and operated Hill Top Chevron, and also worked at DDO. He served on the Ogden City Council for two terms.
Throughout his life, he was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission in Samoa and has held many positions, including Bishop. He most enjoyed working with the youth and Boy Scouts.
He loved sports and enjoyed playing racquetball, football, baseball, and boxing. He enjoyed going fishing in the ocean. He loved his family and enjoyed family dinners and spending time with his children and grandchildren. His family will miss him dearly. They will especially miss his love of singing and telling stories! He had his own lyrics to every song, including the alphabet.
Fasi is survived by his wife, Johanna; four children, William (Kathleen), Fasi, Jr., John (Camille), and Stephan (Amy); 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Elenora; his parents, three sisters, and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Canyon Hollows Ward, 1550 Ruston Ave., Ogden. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Rd., Ogden.
