Florence Edna Jones Thurgood

WEST POINT – Edna Jones Thurgood, beloved wife, mother, grandmother (Grammer), great-grandmother, and sister passed away Thursday, July 4, 2013, at 89 years of age. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. She was born July 1, 1924 in Hooper, Utah to Hyrum George and Florence Flinders Jones. She married Vern L. Thurgood December 18, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married 70 years and had lived in the Syracuse and West Point area all their married life. Edna was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; she had a strong testimony and dedicated many hours in church callings, serving as Relief Society President, Primary President, State Relief Society President and many other callings. She loved being a visiting teacher never missing the opportunity to visit her sisters and caring for them. Edna loved working on family histories and gathering pictures to go with them. She loved being involved in the extraction program and later serving in the Ogden Temple as an ordinance worker. She had a talent for sewing, quilting, cooking and she loved sharing them with others. She was her happiest when she could work in her garden and exchange flowers with the neighbors. She cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A very important part of her life was keeping in touch with her many nieces and nephews and having family gatherings with them. Edna is survived by her three children, LaRae (Lorin) Broadbent, Park City; Sherry (Ed) Golden, Ogden; Alan (Sarah) Thurgood, Providence; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a sister, Eva Jensen, Riverdale. Preceded in death by her husband, parents, six brothers; Alton, Edsel, Minor, Clyde, Don, and Gerald Dean and three sisters; Veta, Elda, and LaRee. The family would like to thank all those that assisted mom during this difficult time including the staff at the Life Care Center of Bountiful and Inspiration Hospice. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 12, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the West Point Stake Center, 550 N. 2300 W. Friends may visit family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Stake Center. Interment, West Point City Cemetery.
