Floyd O. Newey
WASHINGTON TERRACE – Floyd Otto Newey, 102, died Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Washington Terrace Health Services.
He was born September 11, 1907 in a six-room frame house built by his father. He was the tenth of fifteen children – eight girls and seven boys – thirteen of which lived to adulthood. His hardworking parents were Thomas Newey, born October 25, 1867 and Lois Maude Wright, born August 17, 1873.
Floyd and his first wife, Twila Call, had four children: Harold, LouJean, Derlin and Joyce, three of whom still survive. He married three other times and met each of his wives on the dance floor – a fox trot artist for sure. He and his third wife, Carrie Thomas James, were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served as a Bishop for five years in the old Ogden 2nd Ward. He and his third wife, Carrie, served a mission together in British Columbia. During his later years, Floyd was a happy positive temple worker where he could be found among his colleagues four days a week.
Floyd worked as a glass mechanic for Bennetts Paint and Glass Company in Ogden, retiring after 43 years of service.
As a great outdoorsman of fishing, hunting and skiing, he prided himself on being physically active his whole life. Floyd was a member of the Snow Basin Ski Patrol for 21 years. From its inception in the early 40’s, he was right in the middle of the development of Snow Basin as a forest service guard and was in attendance at the dedication of the Wildcat Ski Lift, January 2, 1946.
During the last 25 years, Floyd spent four months out of the year in Quartzsite, Arizona where he enjoyed bike riding and the friendship of fellow travelers. Following the death of his last wife, Olga Palmer Newey on February 10, 1995, his principal residence was with his son and daughter-in-law, Derlin and Grace. During the last two years of his life, he lived with them full time.
Surviving are his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
