Floyd Patterson
Floyd Patterson, 92, a life-long resident of West Point, stubbornly and very reluctantly, left this mortal life Friday, October 31, 2008, surrounded by his family.
Floyd was the last surviving son and child of James Ray and Elizabeth Eunice Dalton Patterson. He was born at home July 25, 1916. He attended Davis County schools and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Le Ida Roberts September 22, 1937 in the Salt Lake Temple. She died November 28, 1983.
He worked for the Davis County Road Department as a heavy equipment operator, helping to build the first road to Antelope Island. He was a member and past president of the Weber-Davis Pony Club. He won many blue ribbons at County and State Fairs with his Shetland and Miniature Ponies. He enjoyed entering parades and competitions, such as weight pulls and Chariot Races. He never missed an opportunity to show off his matched teams and hand-made wagons.
After his untimely and unwanted retirement, he spent many hours building log cabins complete with furniture and miniature covered wagons with hand-cut and stitched harnesses from old leather boots that would magically appear on his lawn and doorstep. He then hooked the wagons to toy model Clydesdale horses. His creations delighted and amazed his grandchildren and anyone lucky enough to receive one.
His restored manure spreader is still on display at the Syracuse Museum. His family still enjoys the stagecoach he built and drove in many parades giving rides to anyone and carried many brides to their weddings.
His strong will and fighting spirit brought him through serious accidents and helped him endure hardships and illnesses in his long life. His sparkling eyes and delightful smile were infectious to all friends and family alike and will always hold a special place in our hearts. He is very much loved and will be deeply missed.
Floyd is survived by a daughter, Louise (Ron) Fielding; a son, Earle (Lynette) Patterson; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, cousins and a brother-in-law, Lynn (Diane) Roberts, and sister-in-law Marva (John) Roberts. He leaves behind many special friends and family who helped care for him and his animals.
Those preceding him in death are his parents; wife Le Ida; two brothers, one sister; a daughter, Judy Rae Garner; a granddaughter, Angela Wilson and a grandson Kurtis Garner; and a very special lady friend, Stella Jay.
Many thanks go to Penny, Eric and Shauna at Dignity Hospice and all the wonderful caring staff at Rocky Mountain Care Center.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at 11 a.m. at West Point Fifth Ward, 3500 W. 300 N. where friends and family may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services.
