Francis W. Foster

Francis W. Foster SOUTH OGDEN - Francis William Foster, after a lifetime of dedicated service, hard work and stalwart example, yielded to the implacable inevitabilities of age on July 13, 2007. He was born June 9, 1913 at Vernal, Utah to Henry Foster and Emily Catherine Forbes. He married Jessie May McQueen of Boise, Idaho, on September 12, 1956 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. A lifelong student, Francis graduated American Fork High School and Brigham Young University Valedictorian, also earning an MBA from the University of Utah. He worked as a photographer and reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune, as editor to the American Fork Citizen, worked briefly for the State of Utah and had a long civilian career at Hill Air Force Base. As a photographer he was the first to document the Timpanogos Cave, his photographs still in use by the U.S. Park Service. In 1938, he reported on a plane crash on Mt. Nebo, hiking in on snowshoes and sending his story by carrier pigeon to be the first to report the incident. He served in many functions at HAFB including Administrative Assistant to the Base Commander. His lifelong LDS church service included being President of the Spanish-speaking Branch in Ogden and various ward positions. He enjoyed reading, languages, foreign and domestic travel, history, culture, literature, drama, dogs, good music and red cars. He was a man of noble bearing and dignity with deep convictions that directed his life. Francis is deeply loved and survived by his wife of more than 50 years Jessie May McQueen, children: Sara (Darrell) Carr, Paula (Richard) Sallstrom, Phillip McQueen Foster, Natalie (Ray) Lacanienta and grandchildren: Gretchen, Stephen, Meagan, Jillian, Emily, Camille, Eliza, Mindrel (Mindy), Anna Elise, Ari and by sister-in-law Phyllis Foster.
