LAYTON - Frank Pratt, age 92, died at home on Friday, July 1, 2011 of causes incident to age. He was born on February 9, 1919 in Modale, IA. At age 17 he moved with his family to Wenatchee, WA where he lived until joining the army in 1942. He served with the 44th Engineers in Scotland, England, Algeria, Italy, France, and Germany. He was overseas for 33 months before coming back to the US.
Upon his return he attended Graceland College in Lamont, IA and while there, married Ferne Updike in 1946. They then moved to Columbia, MO where he attended the University of Missouri, graduating with a BS in Agriculture.
After graduation, he began dairy farming and was a farmer for 40 years in Independence, MO and Wellington, MO.
After retiring from farming, he and Ferne moved to Millville, MO and continued as master gardeners until 2003 at which time they moved to Layton, UT to be near their daughter. During retirement years he and his wife also made multiple trips to visit children in Alaska and explore the western US.
He enjoyed playing card games with his family and was an ardent Scrabble player. Crossword puzzles were part of his daily routine. He had a lifelong love affair with baseball and was a diehard Rockies fan.
He is survived by sons Frank Jr. (Lois), Buffalo, WY; Jon, Talkeetna, AK; and daughter Lorraine, Layton, UT. He is also survived by five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and brother Vernon Pratt, Wenatchee, WA.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ferne, daughter Sylvia, brother Lee and sister Ruth.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road.
